Finally somebody explains how to contract.
I am the President of a small condo building and like most condo owners I had little knowledge on how to approach our construction and repair projects when I took office: about finding the right contractors, defining the scope of work, figuring out what questions to ask, and keeping things legal. Its quite a learning curve and I wish this book would have been available when I started. But even after years of doing such projects, this book is my new reference for anything from checking contractors workers comp to preparing to-do lists when approaching any building project. It should be mandatory reading for anybody who is an officer or director on a condo board. It is also a great read in general and if you are building you own home, you have more guts than me, but don't start without it.

If you own a home, read this book
As a homeowner for over 40 years I have undertaken more projects than I care to remember - everything from adding bathrooms and updating kitchens to expanding my home by adding a family room wing. I wish Kia's book had been available years ago. The advice would have been invaluable to me. Her "insider's" knowledge of the construction business is expertly shared in this terrific book, which contains a treasure of practical, clearly explained advice for any homeowner considering a renovation project.

Don't Learn The Hard Way... Read This Book FIRST!
What a wonderful book! I am so glad this book exists, I will be recommending it it all my clients that plan on building or renovating their homes. I wish this had been in existence when I built my home. I learned the hard way that not all contractors have your best interests at heart and had to deal with every problem as it came up... VERY stressful! You think that building your dream home or doing that renovation that you have been wanting will be a piece of cake as long as you hire experts... think again! There are so many layers to building and renovation that you can not possibly imagine unless you are in that business. Let an expert in construction guide you and be your advocate... read "Avoiding The Con in Construction" before you start and keep it with you until your project is completed. I also want to add that the writing style is knowledgeable, organized, logical, easy to follow and often humorous. You will enjoy it.

*Recognize proposals and contracts that are one-sided or unfair
In addition, this book explains the permitting and inspection process, and how it benefits you. Pitfalls such as liens, jobsite injuries, and other costly events are explained, as are the methods to avoid them.
